$5 billion Race to the Top
This week, President Obama opened competition for states to receive a portion of the $5 billion in Race to the Top education funding. The grants will fund the administration’s education reform goals, such as easing rules for charter schools or judging teachers based on student test scores, although many have concerns about the focus on scores.

How to fix the STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathemetics) education crisis
According to many experts, math and science instruction in the United States is in crisis. Steve Robinson, a member of the White House Domestic Policy Counsel for the U.S. Department of Education and special advisor to Education Secretary Arne Duncan, said the solution to the STEM crisis revolves around improved standards and assessments (and specifically promoting common national standards), effective teachers and school leaders, the use of robust data systems to inform instruction, and targeting chronically low-performing schools.
